Blogs and Hacking?
In class today, I showed a few others this blog and was warned that I shouldn't be posting from a free blogging site (i.e. blogger) because hackers can track me that way and delete files from my computer.
"My uncle's a hacker," my classmate said. "He got into someone's computer like that and deleted his dissertation."
Is there truth to this?? What are the security issues involving blogs, well other than the obvious possibility of stalkers tracking you down..
Anyone with techno-knowledge, feel free to clarify this query.
Otherwise..I will research this...

I can't say as how a pay blogging site would be any safer than a free bloggin site. If someone wants to track your whereabouts on the web it's dreadfully easy. It all comes down to what's on your computer. backup the important stuff and use basic firewall and antivirus stuff will keep the casual hackers at bay.
If someone really wants in, they'll get in.

You shouldn't worry about that too much. Most internet companies are required to keep logs of some visitors for potential criminal investigations. Like, for example, the FBI wants more information on a user making death threats. It's technically possible for someone to hack Blogger and obtain access logs that could identify you. That part is possible, but not very feasible. After all, this is Google we're talking about. They repel hundreds or even thousands of attacks every day.
Even if a hacker gets into Google, that's only half the battle. A hacker would have only the IP you're using when you post. A hacker still needs to access your computer.
If you use dial-up internet, the story ends right there. Every time a dial-up user connects to the internet, a new IP is assigned. So a hacker would need very fresh IP information. Highly unlikely.
If you use some variety of always-on internet, your risk increases somewhat. Broadband and LAN internet users often have the same IP for up to several weeks, so a hacker can use much older IP information. However, if you access a high-speed internet connection through a router, your risk is virtually non-existent. Routers are designed to filter, segment, and sort network traffic. So a router will probably filter out a hacker without even trying.
Ok, so now a hacker knows how to find you, but that's still not everything. The final step is a big one... actually accessing your machine. Linux and Mac users don't have much to worry about here, as those operating systems are reasonably secure. And since they have much lower market share than Windows, most common hacking tools and methods won't work.
Using Windows does put you at a bit more risk, but not as much as you might think.
The two best things you can do to secure a Windows PC are (1) visit Windows Update regularly to obtain security patches that close the loopholes hackers exploit and (2) use a quality firewall.
Microsoft is aware that all versions of Windows have more holes than swiss cheese has eyes, so they're very contentious about plugging holes as soon as they're found.
When people get bitten by Microsoft's security holes, it's usually because they don't visit Windows Update regularly. Remember the Blaster Worm? It circled the globe in less than a day about 18 months ago. Microsoft released a patch that completely eliminated a user's risk five weeks before the infection. The millions of people who got infected never installed the update.
Adding a quality firewall (Norton Personal Firewall/Norton Internet Security and Zone Alarm are my favorites) will make your PC very nearly bullet proof. Add to that a good virus scanner and some kind of anti-spyware solution and you have all the security you'll ever need.
The things people say about hackers are almost always technically possible, but mostly they're just urban legends.
